29-year-old TeenNick boss feels forever 19 at work

NEW YORK — Nick Cannon has been a stand-up comic, movie star, TV host, comedy-show star, producer and rapper.

Cannon has been working hard at his latest job: chairman of the younger version of Nickelodeon — TeenNick, which recently became a 24-hour network.

In a recent interview, Cannon, 29, talked about the TeenNick Halo Awards; what he does as a network chairman; and his wife, Mariah Carey.

Q: It must have been difficult deciding which teens to honor. What made you choose these kids?

A: The most difficult part about the Halo Awards was choosing only four recipients (Brryan Jackson, Megan Kilroy, Darrius Snow and Leah Stoltz). We did our research and found hundreds and thousands of amazing teens, young people doing remarkable things in their community to uplift and inspire people.

Q: What pressures do you have to deal with as chairman of TeenNick?

A: I don’t really recognize any of the pressures; to me, it’s a fun job. I mean, it’s definitely challenging to take a network to the next level. There are definitely people watching me to see what I’m going to do.

I’ve just got to stay focused, keep my eyes on the prize.

Q: Do you think you have to prove yourself because so many artists have vanity projects?

A: I wanted people to understand that this isn’t just some gimmick or this isn’t just some game. I had to change a bunch of stuff about the way I presented myself — take my artist hat off and put my business hat on.

When I have my artist hat on, I want to show up an hour late and be relaxed and kind of do whatever; but when you’re running a company, you have to show up on time, you have to dress the part and be the part.

Q: Mariah says you gave her suggestions on her album. Does she ever do that for you?

A: Absolutely. I mean, we’re partners in every sense. I always say I’m not even worthy to be in the studio with her, so I try to keep my opinions to a minimum. But we’re two creative people all the time.

Q: You are on the verge of 30. How are you going to keep in touch with your TeenNick audience?

A: I feel no different from when I was 19 years old. It’s all about having fun.

TeenNick’s Cannon puts a ‘halo’ on kid heroes

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

TV Q&A NICK CANNONAt 29, Nick Cannon has been a standup comedian, movie star, TV show host, comedy show star, producer and rapper _ he may have Diddy beat for the title of mogul with the most hats.

Cannon has been working hard at his latest job, chairman of TeenNick _ the younger version of Nickelodeon _ that recently became a 24-hour network.

In an interview this week, Cannon talked about the TeenNick Halo Awards, what it’s like to be a network chairman, and trading ideas with his wife, Mariah Carey. But he’s already mapping out his next job after his entertainment days are over.

“I think after I accomplish what I want to in entertainment, then it’s philanthropy _ try to make the world a better place,” says Cannon, nattily dressed in a gold-colored pinstriped suit.

He’s getting a head start with the Halo Awards. Instead of yet another awards show feting celebrities, stars like Justin Timberlake and LeBron James pay tribute to amazing teens doing amazing things. Alicia Keys and Hayden Panettiere also participate in the show, which premieres Friday (8 p.m. EST).

AP: It must have been hard deciding on which teens to honor. What made you pick out these kids?

Cannon: The most difficult part about the Halo Awards was choosing only four recipients. I mean, we did our research and found hundreds and thousands of amazing teens, young people doing remarkable things in their community to uplift people and inspire people. To say that we whittled it down to four, I think we kind of created this squad across the nation of “Halo agents” … agents of change. These are just the first four you are going to see … it’s like the teen Nobel Peace Prize.

AP: What pressures do you have to deal with as chairman of TeenNick?

Cannon: I don’t really recognize any of the pressures, to me it’s a fun job. I mean it’s definitely challenging to take a network to the next level and to wanna be in the same level as the MTVs and even the older Nickelodeon. … There’s definitely people watching me to see what I’m gonna do _ “Is he gonna take this job serious? Is it just a vanity thing?” … There are those little things, but I don’t pay attention to any of that, I’ve just got to stay focused, keep my eyes on the prize.

AP: Do you feel that you have to prove yourself because so many artists have vanity projects?

Cannon: Early on, when I first took the job, I wanted people to understand that this isn’t just some gimmick or this isn’t just some game. I wanna really do it, so even in my everyday life, I had to change a bunch of stuff about the way I presented myself _ take my artist hat off and put my business hat on. When I have my artist hat, I want to show up an hour late, and be relaxed and kind of do whatever, but when you’re running a company, you have to show up on time, you have to dress the part and be the part, you gotta pay attention to everyone around you and focus on being the leader instead of being the focal point.

AP: You are on Twitter a lot, do you worry that you ever go too far?

Cannon: I always go too far on Twitter. … I feel like it was kind of built for me. … I’m so real and there’s so many different sides of me, that one minute you might get an inspirational Bible quote from me and one minute you might get a quote from the movie “American Pimp.” … I think everybody has that and I think that’s what people are realizing from these social networks and being able to connect with celebrities and artists and people in the entertainment community directly … for the followers, they get to see who you really are.

AP: Mariah says you gave her suggestions on her album, does she ever give you suggestions on your job?

Cannon: Absolutely. I mean, we’re partners in every sense. I could never play a part in her music career, I always say I’m not even worthy to be in the studio with her, so I try to keep my opinions to a minimum. But we’re two creative people all the time, so if she sees me doing something in the studio or working on a script or something like that, she’s always given quick little thoughts and little ideas and vice versa.

AP: You are on the verge of 30. How are you going to keep in touch with your TeenNick audience?

Cannon: I’m old! I’m gonna be 30! Man! It’s weird. I mean, I feel no different from when I was 19 years old, and I think that’s another area me and Mariah kind of have (in common), that youth thing going on. … It’s all about having fun. I don’t do anything unless I’m having fun with it … I have to enjoy it. … You’re as young as you feel, and I’ll always been that silly little kid who’s trying to play pranks on people.

Celebrity Status

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Chairman Nick Cannon

I was just reading the HALO boards…. dromedary was feeling skeptical about the celebrities on the show. He says “it’s still just to up their publicity and celebrity status” and “the commercials are basically trying to be like ‘we’re not gonna shine the spotlight on celebrities now’ but they’re shining them on them more than ever. they don’t need celebrities to give awards.”

I want to talk about this for a sec…

First of all. I like a healthy dose of skepticism ’cause we all know there’s a lot of malarkey out there. So no disrespect, dromedary.

BUT. I gotta debate you on that “this is just to up their celebrity status” part. Justin Timberlake, Hayden Panettiere, Alicia Keys and LeBron James don’t need the HALO Awards to up their celebrity statuses. They statuses is UP. Already. When I invited those guys to be a part of this show, they were all doing it for the LOVE. This isn’t the kind of thing your money team is like “ooooh, do it, do it!” They’re like “Now how we gonna find the time for that?”

But they MADE the time, because it mattered to them. I think when you see the show and you’re bawlin’ in your Puffs, you’ll get what I’m sayin’.

And yeah, we’re shining the light on the star power in the commercials because we want people to watch! We want the world to know how AMAZING Bryan and Leah and Darrius and Megan are! We want to shout it from the mountaintops, and you know… when Justin Timberlake shouts something from the mountaintops, a couple more people are gonna cock their ears at that mountain than if Joe Schmo does. That’s life in 2009.

Celebrities have lights shone on them all the time… a lot of times we can’t even stop it if we want to. The Law of Fame. If we can use that Law of Fame to bring something important into that light… then I think that’s a blessed thing.

We good?

I CAN’T WAIT for Friday. Stock up on them Puffs! Get the kind with the aloe!

Personal Message from First Lady Michelle Obama

NEW YORK, Dec. 1, 2009 – TeenNick, Nickelodeon’s 24-hour TV network exclusively for and about teens, unveils the first-ever TeenNick HALO Awards – a new concept in awards shows featuring four mega-celebrities who don’t receive the awards themselves—they give them out to deserving teens in support of their philanthropic causes. LeBron James, Alicia Keys, Hayden Panettiere and Justin Timberlake join TeenNick Chairman Nick Cannon in an hour-long special presentation that recognizes and celebrates real teens who are “Helping And Leading Others” (HALO) and working to making a significant difference in the world. The TeenNick HALO Awards premieres Friday, Dec. 11, at 8 p.m. (ET), on TeenNick, followed by an encore presentation at 9 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nick at Nite. Conceived, hosted and executive produced by Cannon, the TeenNick HALO Awards, in partnership with the Entertainment Industry Foundation, also features an exclusive personal message from First Lady Michelle Obama.

“There are so many regular young people who are agents of change in their communities, and I wanted to recognize their efforts,” said Nick Cannon, Chairman, TeenNick. “One person can make a difference, and it’s my hope that this special will encourage ongoing activism and inspire a new generation of leaders.”

The TeenNick HALO Awards highlights the unique stories of four teens–Brryan Jackson, Megan Kilroy, Darrius Snow and Leah Stoltz–who have made enormous service contributions in their communities. The teens are each surprised by a visit from Cannon and awarded a grant for their organization, scholarship funds and an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet and connect with a celebrity who shares a similar passion for their cause.

“We know today’s generation of teens have a deep interest in giving back to their community, and Nick Cannon came to us with the brilliant idea of celebrating and supporting these efforts by creating an award show that flips the script and features today’s biggest celebrities giving out the awards instead of receiving them,” said Marjorie Cohn, Executive Vice President, Original Programming and Development, Nickelodeon. “The stories of these four teens are both motivational and uplifting, and we think the HALO Awards will help to inspire other young people in their communities to get involved in service.”

TeenNick’s website, www.TeenNick.com, will feature information on each of the teens’ and celebrities’ organizations, as well as list extensive resources on how people can get involved on local levels throughout the year. In addition, teens are invited to share stories of others who are also making a difference.

In support of the TeenNick HALO Awards, TeenNick will run a mobile sweepstakes “Do Good in Your ‘Hood with Nick Cannon.” The network will award one lucky winner by bringing Nick Cannon to his or her town to lead a service opportunity in the community. Contestants between the ages of 13-24 years old may enter the sweepstakes by texting HALO to 91757 during the sweeps period from Dec. 11 through Jan. 10, 2010.

Following are the TeenNick HALO Award honorees, along with information on their organizations and their celebrity match:

    • Bryan Jackson, a St. Charles, MO native, created Hope Is Vital, an organization that advocates for HIV/AIDS awareness education and outreach, after being infected with the HIV virus as an infant. His HALO match, Alicia Keys, shares his passion for the cause with Keep A Child Alive, her charity that provides life saving treatment, care and support services to children and their families living with HIV/AIDS in Africa and India.
    • Having grown up on the shores of Santa Monica, Megan Kilroy now runs Team Marine, an advocacy group at her high school that conducts ocean research and supports community activism, outreach and education. Her HALO match, Hayden Panettiere, is the spokesperson for The Whaleman Foundation and its Save the Whales Again! campaign whose mission is to end all commercial whaling and dolphin hunting and to preserve and protect whales, dolphins and their ocean habitat.
    • Darrius Snow, who grew up in the projects of Atlanta, successfully built up and ran BTEAM (Bankhead Teens Encouraging Action by Motivating Others), an organization dedicated to community improvement by providing kids and teens with positive physical activities as an alternative to violence, drugs and gangs. His HALO match, LeBron James, founded the LeBron James Family Foundation in 2004, which empowers children and single-parent households through innovative programming and initiatives, strengthening the ties between family members and building hope through education, physical fitness and better health for those who are dealing with adversity.
    • After living with scoliosis, Leah Stoltz started Curvy Girls of Long Island, a group that provides education, support and friendship for teen girls diagnosed with the condition. Her HALO match is Justin Timberlake, whose charity is The Shriners Hospitals for Children, a pediatric, orthopedic healthcare system with 22 hospitals that specialize in orthopedics, burn care, spinal cord injury and cleft lip and palate.

The Entertainment Industry Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, is the leading charitable organization of entertainment industry, and has distributed hundreds of millions of dollars to support programs addressing critical health, education and social issues. Hiding My Light Under A Bushel

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Chairman Nick Cannon

People. I feel like a sixty watt bulb plugged in to a fifty thousand watt outlet right now. There are a million things going on at TeenNick headquarters and I can only tell you little bits and pieces, or my publicity staff is going to have a temper tantrum on my office floor. And I just had these carpets cleaned so we can’t have that.

I’ll be able to show you some more about the amazing, inspiring teens we’re honored to be recognizing on the HALO Awards (December 11, 8 pm et, be there!) soon enough. In the meantime, just rest easy that the HALO Awards are gonna be LARGE. Like I said, you do NOT want to miss this.

Oh and while you’re still picking up your socks that tonight’s Degrassi knocked off, my Chief Degrassi Officer tells me you can already take a look at what’s coming up next.

Peace!
